Artist Notes: Metaphysical optimism, put simply, is the view that this world that we live in is the best world. In philosophy, there is much debate about this term, as many would argue that we have no way in seeing other worlds to determine if ours is the best, how are we to know if there are multiple worlds, and of course, there are bad things in this world, so how could it possibly be the best? Philosophy debate aside, there are times while I'm painting where I am examining my subject and I wonder how perfect conditions have to be for there to be water, breathable air, a sun that is the perfect distance away to keep us alive, and for me to be alive and studying it. Not only that, but the unique nature in which they all come together, that we can see these phenomenal colors and textures and way that they all interact with one another. And that I can see this and recreate the same effect on canvas for that one fleeting moment to be captured for (hopefully) centuries. A scene that only I witnessed in that exact spot at that exact time with those exact conditions. We are priviledged to exist in this moment, on this timeline, in this world. And to me, that makes me think this is the best world of all worlds.
